I mentioned this on another site so I thought I would just copy and paste it here:

I was drunk last night, very drunk.

A car sped past me very fast and I fell unconcious from the momentary sensory-overload. This never happened before, when I was sober, but alcohol plays with the sense. I thought to myself, and established that it was simply the noise of the car that had caused it. If only the world was quiter....

!

Could a hearing aid that makes everything quiter solve this problem. The guy in There Something About Mary had earmuffs, but they block out sound completely: I needed something that would sounds quieter or 'softer'. A Hearing aid that does the complete opposite of what it's supposed to do for both ears would be ideal and would work ok with younger Autistics if you could get them to wear the damn things. Any thoughts?

Well, my guess is that alcohol does funny things to the senses...so, the first step to prevent this would probably be to not get drunk. But, a hearing aid might do the trick as it will muffle the sound significantly just b/c of the fact there is something in your ear covering your ear drum, and then you could probably adjust the volumen accordingly.

Have you ever tried just plain ear plugs? The kind people use to keep water out of their ears or to drown out a snoring bedmate don't block out all noise but do help quieten things down a bit. I picked some up at a drugstore.

I have tried them, but I find them uncomfortable and I quickly build up ear wax. I am also interested in something that I can alter the volume with and the tone of the sounds I hear.

If I can make a working pair and patent it, hmm....
