View Full Version : Concerned for my grandson

I have a 21 month old grandson that I am increasingly concerned about. He doesn't talk or even try to say word yet. I noticedrecently when I was trying to show him a toy, he would not even look at what I was showing him. It seemed different than ignoring me. I notice other things that just don't seem right. He runs as if he is a loosed animal sometimes fltting from one thing to another and screams alot.
I don't know if he has socialization problems from not being with other children at all or if he is just delayed. Anyone have any thoughts for this age child?

I would say autism is a possibility based on what you've written.
Are the screams happy, mad or both?

Welcome to the group!

Thanks for replying.

He squeals alot whether happy or mad. I hope to spend some time with him this weekend and observe him more. We live a distance from them and don't see them as often as we'd like. (maybe once a month on average.) We aren't able to really know how much his parents talk to him and such. However, I'd think he'd pick up words from Elmo and other shows he watches even if they didn't.

Anyway, when did you first notice signs in your child?

The lack of talking became impossible to ignore after 3 years old. He was our first, so did not realize about some other signs. When I read a description of autism, it hit me.

Denial is common for parents.

Hi grammy,

I have a question about your grandson, have you noticed him stacking things or putting things in order of color or size? That is one of the most noticable traits of autism or aspergers.

My grandson is 19 months and does not talk. He doesn't even say bye-bye. He does seem alert and looks at me and brings me books to read to him. My concern is he was born with a small head, he walks on his tip toes, unless he has shoes on, he so into "lights on, lights off" but he does know that when he is at our house, Grandpa is the one to play that with him. I'm just scared and think maybe my daughter is too but not admitting it. What can I do....

Sally, Have you mentioned your concerns to your daughter?

Yes, and she to me. I was with him today and I noticed the screaming. He screams at the dog when he gets too close to the table and he screamed for just no reasons. We did take him to the doctor because of a cold and both ears are infected and he is congested.

In case you haven't already thought of this -
If he takes antibiotics for the infection, look into giving him probiotics as well.

What are probiotics? I just learned that his preschool teacher told my daughter to have him elvaluated but I think my daughter is too afraid to tell me. She told my husband. I think she knows how much I love him and she doesn't want to worry me any more then possible. I am calling her tonight and having a good talk. She didn't return any of my calls from over the weekend. The problem is that I am so worried and have been making myself sick about it. I am not getting any sleep, so if my daughter would have him elvaluated I could at least stop worring and get on with it....
What are probiotics? ...
Probiotics are good bugs that we need. Acidolphilus is an example. You can get some by eating yogurt with live cultures.

Antibiotics tend to kill off the good with the bad. It can lead to yeast overgrowth. My son and husband had yeast overgrowth (and they hadn't even been on antibiotics in a long time), and we didn't know it til we had Organic Acid tests done.

Now I can recognize what yeast overgrowth looks like with my son. He gets very moody and burps a lot. Now we all take probiotics every day in capsule form.

Thank you, he does eat yogurt everyday, he loves it. But I will have my daughter look into it more. My neice, who is a special ed. teacher is spending this morning with my daughter and grandson. She told me she would call me and also tell my daughter if she thinks he should be evaluated. I'm feeling a little relief from that.
