I'm the father of a beautiful, bright and gifted 9yr old girl. She has high level autism. She is after a lot of work, very verbal. I feel blessed that she was given to me. She, as all the others are Gods special ones. I am a member of COSAC, ASA, and a government relations advocate for N.A.A.R. I was in the early 1990,s a counselor in the field of autism. In that time period, it was catergorized as a mild form of retardation. How time has change in a 10 yr period.

hello advocate, i'm mom to a beautiful 7 yo individual. I hope this doesn't offend anyone but here's how we realized we're not southern baptists, i took my daughter to a friends church and when we took her to class i told the lady she's autistic, the lady replied that's ok my sister is retarded. Shauna responded with no mam autistic means i'm smarter than you. my point is i live in the south and times really haven't changed that much here

in my daycare ,after being told one of the children in the daycare was autistic, i actually had a parent ask me if her daughter could ''catch'' autism this was the year 2001 and the parent is a receptionist in the police station. her daughter is still here in my daycare and her mom is thrilled she has never ''caught '' the autism. oh things may have changed but the ignorance is still here, laurie
