Hello I am new Here but not to Autisim. I live in Brooklyn, NY and I have a 17 year old son who is Autistic. Recently he has had 3 Seizures. From what I have read this is common in Puberty...any one heard of this to be true?

I have feelings of quilt because of the fact that he is autistic but now I have a new dynamic of him suffering with seizures and being on medication. This has alwas been a struggle but now this adds a new demension. Anyone have any thoughts or comments?

Quote from article:
"About one in four autistic individuals begin to have seizures during puberty. The exact reason for the onset of seizures is not known, but it is likely that the seizure activity may be due to hormonal changes in the body. Sometimes these seizures are noticeable, (i.e., associated with convulsions); but for many, they are small, subclinical seizures, and are typically not detected by simple observation."

Guilt feelings won't help - hope you can get rid of guilt. Puberty was a difficult time for us, but we didn't deal with seizures.

Thank you so much for your reply. I feel very helpless...I feel like i should do something but I do't know what to do. I am currently looking for a physician who specializes in autistic children.

Here's some more info:
"There is substantial evidence that certain nutritional supplements, especially vitamin B6 and dimethylglycine (DMG), can provide a safer and more effective alterative to drugs, for many individuals. (Write to the Autism Research Institute for publication P-16)."

Yes, I know the helpless feeling, which is probably why I'm always online looking things up. Its hard to find doctors who are knowledgable about autism and take insurance.
