questioning autism in my nephew

Hi Community, I don't know how to get started, but I have a nephew I think is Autistic and need some help from you "others that share" my same type of concerns and are more knowledgeable than me.
He may be a combo of FAE and Autistic. He is 8 years old and has wide set eyes and a flat nose. But the autistic part I need help with is that he has since he was a baby, and now tries to hide it, but he shakes things like a piece of racecar while making a face until an adult sees hem, then he goes somewhere else to do this. He is beginning to miss shcool and a lot of time when you talk to him, it's like he's spacing off into air and finally he will hear you and respond. Are these autistic signs as I am worried about him, and his mother(my sister) will never discuss this issue. Thank you for your help, and I need to write this site down so I don't lose it. FAE? Not sure what that is.

Your sister may be in denial...Is it just the autism idea she won't discuss, or all of the issues? They could be signs of autism or something else.

:p Hi autmom, I am so glad someone replied. I quess I didn't mean chat room, just how to get replies. And YOU helped me to understand. FEA is fetal alcohol syndrome, i'm sorry I wasn't more specific. I take it you may have a son with Autism. Do you know if Autistic children can have habits like what I desribed with the race car track and staring into space?? I really want to help this boy as I love him and it is beginning to affect his schooling, ya know??? Thanks for answering!!!! :)

Yes, they can...however, those alone may not be enough...I mean what about language, social behaviour or other signs? The people at school should be helping out with this. They must notice something. Hopefully they will provide some help. And of course with FEA, it may be hard to piece out other issues.
