My son is 12 and has been diagniosed with asperger's around 5 years ago. We had a great year last year in 6th grade and looking forward to 7th. If you have any questions about AS or any advice for a mother who reads anything i can get my hands on about Asperger's, please contact me. :)

One of the first things i noticed about Jeremiah that made him different was the fact that he had these FITS in public. it was usually nothing major that he was upset about -- someone talking to him or petting him on the head - those small things would set him off! Yes, people looked at me (and some actually told me to my face) that it was MY fault that he acted like that......... and EVERY birthday until he was 7 he cried at........ he didn't like everyone looking at him - especially when we sang "happy birthday". on his second birthday, he got magnet letters and numbers for his birthday.......... he knew them all by sight! (on his second birthday)

Jeremiah is 12 and is still most comfortable with me (mom) by his side wherever he goes (I know one day he'll outgrow it but now i enjoy every minute -- well, MOST EVERY MINUTE -- i need a break sometimes, too)

Jennifer

Jennifer, My son won't let us sing the "Happy Birthday" song :D ....can't blame him.

He also was into those magnetic letters and numbers very early!

Here's a good article by Tony Attwood and Carol Gray:

12 was a good year for my son with AS. It was a breakthrough year! He started developing formal thought-- you know thinking about how you think? He was able to self observe in ways he NEVER could before!
We were standing in front of the Dairy Isle as he was brewing up a grand meltdown and he said to me "I don't know what it is, I just feel oogie all over and I need to go home" So we did. No melt down!

Enjoy 12. :)

BTW: Whoever thought up those hand motion songs ruined singing for my son! What a waste of perfect pitch! LOL.
