Hello All,
Looking for some advice with a problem with my son. He is now 12 and was born premature. He has a slight case of cerebral palsy and is unable to speak. He has never been "diagnosed" with autism, but doctors have said he shows all the signs of it. He does the rocking back and forth, wall pushups, everything is in a routine with him, etc. Over the past couple of years, my wife and I have noticed a problem with certain noises that drive my son crazy. For example, if we are outside and he hears the garden hose running(such as washing car, watering flowers) he starts crying and screaming uncontrollably. He doesn't cover his ears, but he acts like it hurts him. He will continue to cry until he is taken out of that environment and then it takes a while to get him calmed down. Other noises that give the same reaction: the mixer or blender in the kitchen, the furnace motor running if we are in bed and all is quiet, last year it was anybody bouncing a basketball. These are just an example. Last year, we flew to Florida for vacation and he did the same thing in the airport. In the plane he was fine, but when we landed and got into Orlando airport, same reaction. It was so bad, we drove him home. We don't know if it's behavior problem, or if these "certain" noises do hurt his ears. Anybody who could give any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Otherwise, he is a very happy boy. He does understand when we talk to him and will follow directions. He is in a public school MH class and does very well. Thanks for any help

Have you tried providing him some headphones or other noise protection for his ears?

You might also want to look into AIT, which can help with noise sensitivity. My son used a home type of AIT called EASe. It was very helpful for him.

What is EASe? My son is also sensitive to noise. It seems he is sort of waking up a little. Lately he has been more and more aware of his surroundings and what is going on so noises we don't even notice everyday bother him incredibly. We bought him an mp3 player and loaded it with classical music for when we go to places that seem to bother him now. Sometimes he wears it and sometimes the feel of the headphones on his ears bother him. Any technique that could possibly help us is always useful.
