Hi all,
I am 23 years old and high functioning autistic with savant skills such as perfect pitch and an excellent sense of rhythm. I have been to a special school from when I was diagnosed with autistic tendencies at the age of 5.
I also went to college and got qualifications mainly with computers but later on I got a BTEC diploma in Music Technology with several distinctions :)
Now I am doing voluntary work as a computer technician for a local asperger/autism association.

Hello Sim,
i am a mum to a high-functioning 6 year old who attends a NAS school so would be interested in hearing your stories and memories etc. My son has severe behaviour probs also and wondered whether you had similar probs as a child and if you can remember any causes and solutions?
Sian :)

Zacks_mummy its nice to hear that your son attends an NAS school. I used to go to an autistic unit in a special school but then I was considered 'too bright' to be in there. After that I spent the rest of my school years in classrooms where they had pupils with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Even though I had a 1 to 1 aide this helped with behavioural problems and being able to break certain parts into smaller pieces but it didn't help social skills in the playground. I would need an aide for that but it wasn't part of their policy although I wish it would be.

Hello Sim,
Yes Zack is lucky to attend a NAS school. He himself has a very high IQ and accademically is above average. My LEA wanted to send Zack to the local special school for children of mixed needs and with learning diff and i am so glad i stood my ground as i feel this would of been detrimental to him and his future. I can't beleive the amount of progress Zack has made whilst at this school. Zack has weekly social skills lessons and this has been very useful to Zack and to myself in developing ways to help him. However he does still present with beahvioural probs ie swearing, innapropriate language and it's hard trying to deal with this in a high-functioning child.

How old is Ryan? Sal is going to be 5 in May...He is in a program called the Delaware Autism Program. The school is just for autistic children.

I am Lucas. You can tell because it is over there <--.
I was diagnoses with AS in 1995, aged eleven. I teach Breakdance and I do youth work at my old youth club.
My LEA sent me to a school for Dyslexics, despite my reading age being at adult level. We think they did this to save money.

Hi everyone - my name is Becky and I have 2 boys. My oldest son is 7, and my little guy will be 5 in June. The soon to be 5 year old was diagnosed PDD-NOS last September. Will started a new pre-school in December and loves it! We have been very lucky with all of the programs available to us in our school district. He's adjusting well to everything, but like everyone, we still have our bumps in the road.
Lucas, you seem to have a great sense of humor! I look forward to sharing info and stories with everyone. -Becky

[FONT=Comic Sans MS]Hi....I have a giggly loving 4 1/2 year old son who was diagnosed with PDD-NOS just this last August. We have been fighting with insurance and "experts" that have told me he has everything from bipolar disorder to he's a "normal" child with speech delays. His speech has improved dramatically since starting in the early childhood program at his school and receiving 1 hour of ST per week. He has oral sensitivity issues(plays in his mouth, chews his cuticles-ouch, won't eat anything new) and has many behavior issues(raging, defiant, not potty trained, obsessive, his first re action when mad is to hit). I'm looking for some encouragement that a lot of this stuff will dissipate as he gets older. I'm also looking for advice for what behavior mods have worked for other parents in the same boat as me.

Hi Adam's Mom,
Are any of the "experts" helping you with potty training, etc.?

The potty trainingthing....well some of them say he just might not be ready, some say to sit him evry thirty minutes...haha If he doesn't want to go into the bathroom he won't go. If I drag him in kicking and screaming then he'll be traumatized.....I'm just going to give it a little time.
We've recently relocated to Montana from Las Vegas and we are going to get settled for a while before trying again.
