My daughter was diagnosed with HFA at about 4 years old. She is now 7. She is everything that a dad could want in a daughter. My wife and I didn't want her spending another summer at home watching TV (her favorite fix). This summer my wife and I sent her to Day Camp at a local park in Whittier, Ca. We weren't sure what to expect, but it was our hope that she would develop her social skills. She tends to be able to play better one-on-one. Today my wife (at the request of my daughter's behaviorlist) went to observe my daughter at Day Camp, to get an idea of how she progressing. The camp is set up so that kid break into groups and then rotate between counselors for a given activity. I'll be honest, she's had a great summer and I felt she was safe while she was in their care, but I think they lacked the skills to deal with children such as her. They tended to let her isolate rather than participate. Though this was our first visit, they did not help her to do things such as kicking the ball or running the bases in the right direction when she did try. For any autistic kid, running and kicking a ball would be like winning the Olympics, but I would have like thiem to at least try. We plan to talk to them in a positive manner to see if they can provide more support for her in the future (if we return). I know that they cannot provide one-on-one all the time, but a little more attention directly or behind the scenes would help her a lot I feel.

I was wondering if anyone had found any day camps out there that provided satisfactory social interaction for our children. I live in the Whittier, Ca. area.

Thanks,
