Hello I just wanted to know how any parents felt when they found out their child has autism? I recently had been told my 4 yr old daughter was,and I would like some advice on how to better myself with more info about it. I am Native American and I don't know anyone in my culture that knows anything about this.

Hello Destiny

I am a mother of a almost 4 year old autistic daughter named Emily. Shes was diagnosed when she was about 18 months old. We have had early intervention and now we get wrap-around-services. She went from being non-verbal to verbal. She has been getting therapy 3-4 times a week with developmental therapy first then speech and Occupational therapy. She has inproved alot. We are now working on social behavior and being out in the community.

She still isn't potty trained and she only eats certain kinds of food depending on texture or smell. Emily has her good days and bad days. Emily is also ADHD, APD, TICS and Autistic. I thought it was going to be easy at first but it wasn't. I had a hard times with having therapist at my house all morning long and manage to keep house and take care of my other children and hubby.
We finally managed and I have to say it has paid off. She is my pretty little girl.

I know it isn't easy to hear about your daughter being autistic, but we have to keep moving forward and treat our children as normal as we can. If we treat them different, then we have set ourselves for some problems in the future. I can only say that you can take it one day at a time. I hope you recieve all the help you can get and stay strong.
