Hello,
My good friend and now fiance has a 10yr old son who was recently diagnosed as autistic. From birth until now the doctors diagnosed him as "mild retardation". I find it hard to believe this but this is what I've gotten for information. Now that I am formally involved in the childs life it is possible for me to make a difference and work with him so he can have a better quality of life. It saddens me to think of the lack of care he's gotten thus far but I believe it's never too late. I joined this site as a start to a wonderful future for this little boy, whom I want to love so very much. I am reading as much as I can and trying to educate myself as quickly as possible b/c I would like the boy to live with myself and his father. His mother is unable to care for him properly and she has been in the denial mode for 10yrs which has not helped her son's development. I want to change that for him, he needs lots of love but also lots more guidance and work. So far, he's been a "special needs" school from 8-3 everyday then he goes home and either sits infront of the TV or computer. He has had no chores, no regimen at all. He isn't taken out doors, he isn't fed particular foods...it's the same food everyday...the same shows everyday...the same stale house air everyday. He is a beautiful boy, a very smart boy and I am fighting to get this boy all the care and love he deserves....I need help from this forum and need to meet some parents of autistic children. I have so many questions...need so many answers. I hope someone reads this and sends me a thread. The only way I know to begin is by prayer, education and love. Help!! Thanks so much and I hope I can learn a lot from all your hard work and love as well. :)
