Hello everyone! I am new to the site, but I have been reading all the forums. Great advice. My son was diagnosed high-functioning autistic when he was 5, he is now 7. The suspicion came up when he was 3 and it took 2 years to finally be diagnosed.
My son is about as close to normal as you can get with an autisitic child. If a stranger were to meet him for the first time they would think he was perfectly normal, but after studying for a short period of time he really has his little quirks. It all started when I was concerned about his temper tantrums, the unwillingness to potty train, the speech delay, and his unusually intense shyness. But after two years here is a list of all his quirks
Abnormal repetitiveness
Constant arm or hand flapping when over stimulated
Shuts down when not comfortable in a situation
Speech Delay
Hard to calm down when over emotional
Totally dependent on routines or schedules
Lack of imaginative play
Unusually drawn to lights or TVs
Lacks in fine motor skills
Struggles in social interaction with other children
Abnormally shy of people he knows
and many more
He is however extremely intelligent. He is now in 1st grade and will be moving on to 2nd grade. He excels in technical areas, like working with computers and playing with video games. He is smarter with computers than most adults are.
During the time of his diagnosis I was a single mom. Honestly it wasn't a shock cuz I kinda knew already. I didn't have a hard time adjusting because he was my first and only child and I guess it just came naturally. He is a verry affectionate, handsome, and DRAMATIC little boy. He will either grow up to be a computer programmer or an actor....he is good at both.
