I'm Teri and am new to this site. I have three children, 2 boys and a girl. My second son is 7 years old and autistic. My oldest is 10 and my daughter is 6 and both on regular school kids. My 7 year-old was diagnosed as autistic when he was three. Even though I suspected that something was different about him from birth, it wasn't until he was three and continued to have almost no language (maybe one or two-word sentences) that I finally stopped saying "he'll grow out of it". Although my children's father and I are no longer married we are still very involved with the upbringing of our children.

My main reason for joining this site was to be able to talk with others from time to time about how they are faring in raising an autistic child. Because I have three and work full-time outside of the home as well as in my home I don't always get the chance to really talk to others just to check in and get advice that I am on the right track. I'm very good at getting information for others but when it comes to myself the time is limited.

Right now, I am working on getting a service dog for my son. I had never heard about this until approximately 5 months ago when I was watching the Jane Pauley Show and waiting to go to my son's school because he had gotten into trouble. I really believe that having a "special friend" that he can connect with when the transitions just seem to be too much for him will be really helpful. This school has been a very difficulty one for him and although he is doing better, it is really giving me a preview of what middle school and high school may be like for him; for all of us actually. Both my children love their brother but it does get hard for them as well when he has meltdowns (which have increased in the past 5 months with the pressures of second grade).

Although I am not always able to come onto the site as much as I would like, I welcome responses and will respond to all that I can.

Thanks... :)

Welcome to the group! I also saw the show w/the service dogs. Good luck with that!
